As a person of Pakistani origin (well technically speaking, I'm actually "Kashmiri" - but I won't go into that here) the term "paki" doesn't feel derogatory or offensive to me at all.

But I'm second generation British (dual nationality) and born a long time after the first migrants settled here. It was our parents and grandparents that were targeted by racial attacks from *certain* groups (emphasis on "certain" because most Brits are nice).

For those people the word "paki" is almost reminiscent of the word "nigger" and how that affects African Americans as a reminder of those difficult times.

Combine this information with the knowledge that most "paki's" are also Muslims, and the rise of Islamophobia in the recent decades, it's not hard to see why this word has seen a resurgence in recent times.
